Funeral Etiquette

Show your support

Funerals are a very difficult time. You want to show sympathy and support to the grieving family, but sometimes it can be difficult to express their feelings appropriately. Here are some tips to help you.

Start by visiting the family at the funeral home. You will not take them by surprise because this is where one expects to receive condolences from the friends and colleagues of the deceased. It is not important to stay there for a long time, what matters is to show the grieving family that they are not alone. Your presence, warm gestures and words of comfort help a lot.

How to express sympathy varies greatly and may include shaking hands, hugging the person, offering words of comfort such as:

“I'm sorry” “Marie was a very good friend, I will miss her” “I offer you my condolences” “I am happy to have known Marie” “Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you” or simply, share a memory

Sometimes it is not possible to make a visit. Here are other ways to show your sympathy and support.
